Indigent Health Care
"...Parkland Memorial Hospital plans to bill Mexico and other countries to help cover the costs of health care for indigents.The plan, which also seeks payments from adjoining counties in Texas, has brought a negative response from the Mexican government, with a diplomat terming it "an act of discrimination."Last year, hospital officials said, Dallas County spent $76.5 million to treat people from outside Dallas. Of that, almost $27 million was not reimbursed.Much of the cost was for treating patients from adjoining counties in Texas, which Dallas County officials claim is unfair to local taxpayers. "If you're not Dallas County residents, we think where you are from should pay for your indigent health care," Judge Keliher said.
Hugo Juarez, a consul official at the Mexican Consulate in Dallas, was visibly perturbed.He called the statements made by the judge "a strange posture, a strange reasoning." He said there had been no agreement or contract between his nation and Dallas County that would make such action legal."
If you think states should have to absorb all the money spent on health care for illegals think of the middle class tax payers that do pay taxes, but don't have health care for their families...
I seriusly doubt they'll get reimbursed.... but I kind of like the idea.

It really makes me sick that there isn't really a way for those who aren't impoverished, yet aren't filthy rich, either, to have affordable health care. Unless they work in a factory or other large enough corporation....but I guess that is even subjective to what one would deem affordable.
They are most likely just making a statement, but it's one that is LONG overdue.
I say try to get the money wherever you can. If something dosen't give then they will end up like Tarrant county who flat out refuses to see illegals.
Since the U. S. federal government is unable/unwilling to shut the border down, they should be held accountable to the taxpayers for all the services. Enough said. SHUT THE BORDERS. We should not be paying for all these services if you are here ILLEGALLY. We have enough trouble trying to get the indigent LEGAL citizen to pay most of whom can’t afford health insurance.
The original post refers to those not paying hospital bills as “indigents”. It seems that some are assuming they were illegal aliens, I don’t believe it said that. Since Mexico and other counties are being sent a bill, I suppose it could be either or both.
It's more of a question of what’s wrong with healthcare that so many can not afford it.
Illegals have it very, very good here. They make ten times or more what they made in Mexico. Sort of like you or me making $100,000 a year and then crossing the border and getting a job that paid $1 million a year. Would you do it?
They are rushing here for the opportunity. Most of them work one or more low paying jobs, then work themselves up to better jobs. Soon the aren’t just mowing your lawn, they have their own landscape company.
I admire their work ethic and their igeniutiy, but certainly wish they would come here legally pay for education, learn English, pay for health care, pay income taxes, and pay into social security benefits.
I don't think someone who calls themselves a doctor should refuse to assist ANYONE. Health care should be available to EVERYONE.
Might be a pipe dream, but I believe in it.
